Enjoying a cruise on the Northern Star on Lake Memphremagog

Lyndon State College Foundation supporters enjoyed an evening of refreshments, conversations and splendid fall weather on Lake Memphremagog on September 29th, 2024. Everyone had a chance to meet President David Bergh and then gifting $20,000 for next years students who are attending VTSU-Lyndon. We certainly hope these students complete their years at the Lyndon campus and make their livelihood in the Northeast Kingdom enriching our area.

The LSC Foundation thanks all our supporters who enlighten the lives of so many students. LSC Foundation 2022 Appeal for donations

October 14, 2022

Dear LSC Foundation Supporter,

The statistics below are ample reason to donate to the LSC Foundation to support the youth of the Northeast Kingdom further their education and help change the demographics of our area.

Last year many of you responded to our simple message: No kids, no college. We stated our goal of providing scholarship assistance for one student from each of the high schools in the Northeast Kingdom. Thanks to your help, we awarded seven, $2500 scholarships to graduating seniors this spring.

Recently VT Governor Phil Scott outlined the state’s labor and demographic challenges at a symposium in Essex Junction. While Vermont’s population grew a bit overall, not so in Caledonia County (-3.2%) nor in Essex County (-6.2%) Those counties have also experienced a 15% or greater decline in the labor force plus an 11.9 % decline in K-12 enrollment. Scott correctly noted that those figures add more pressure on the Vermont State College System.

With your support we hope to help more students stay in the NEK at NVU-Lyndon (soon to be Vermont State University Lyndon). Some of those will be the teachers, nurses, childcare providers, and tech workers we need in the NEK. Again, it’s simple. We need to help our youth be in the kingdom and stay in the Kingdom.

The LSC Foundation is appealing to you for a donation that will increase funds we make available to NVU-Lyndon for scholarships for NEK students. We are committed to the NEK and further education of students living here in hopes they will remain in the area to further their careers or to start their own businesses. We have cancelled our fundraiser i.e.1950’s-1960-s Rock ‘N’ Roll event this year due to Covid 19.

We are launching for the first time a scholarship to a graduating senior from each of the high schools in the NEK. The $2500 onetime award is to be an incentive for the student to apply to NVU-Lyndon and help increase enrollment. Once accepted the Foundation will pay the award to the college. If successful this could be an annual award given by a Foundation member at award ceremonies at the respective high school.

We need your help to fund our endeavor and make an impact, to increase enrollment. The guidance directors at the schools are selecting the student most likely to be successful in college. Open your pocketbooks to help this worthy cause—the pandemic is wreaking havoc on our society—we need to work together to avert any more damage than necessary. We are sure you have all heard the recent news of the Vermont State Colleges financial crisis and the near closure of NVU-Lyndon, NVU-Johnson, and Vermont Tech in Randolph. The Chancellor and trustees changed their minds and we have a year reprieve. Four small colleges in Vermont have closed. We feel the college on land TN Vail donated to the State of Vermont should always have a college on it. NVU-Lyndon is an economic engine to the whole business community of the Northeast Kingdom.

You might wish to talk to your tax advisor about charitable gifts of appreciated stock or mutual funds—you will get the charitable deduction without paying capital gains. If you are over 70 ½, your distribution from an IRA is another consideration for gifting.

Letter to Governor Scott, VSC Trustees and NEK legislators

To Board of Trustees and Legislators and Governor Scott:

The Lyndon State College Foundation is in our 40th year raising funds for scholarships for NEK students attending NVU Lyndon. I am the current president of the Foundation, a 501c-3, and share concerns we have about the trustees’ recommendations to close NVU-Lyndon. Community members have stepped up over the years to support the college which is an integral part of our area socially and economically.

Theodore N. Vail saw the need for further education of young people in the NEK and donated his land to the State of Vermont for a School of Agriculture. The state was later to have the Lyndon Teachers College move to the site establishing Lyndon State College on Vail Hill. LSC was and is to continue to be the social and economic engine of the area.

Looking over the names of trustees and legislators in positions to decide the fate of Lyndon-NVU: I notice no one lives in the Northeast Kingdom. It takes someone like T.N.Vail, who lived here, to see the need of the area, and take action. Many students of the NEK work one or two jobs and might live at home to afford to attend Lyndon. My nephew is currently one of those students today.

Closing Lyndon would mean traveling to Chittenden or Rutland Counties. Once you leave the NEK for higher education-will you return? None of my four children did-as is the story of so many.

I think it is short-sighted to close NVU-Lyndon especially in a poverty-stricken area of the state. It would leave the entire east side of Vermont, from Vernon to Newport, with no institution of post-secondary education. It makes more sense to close Johnson and to move that student body east. Governor Scott is trying to pay young people to return to the state as we have such an aging population. Isn’t this going in the wrong direction?

I know things are tough-the Covid 19 pandemic is like a sci-fi movie none of us expected. Our ancestors lived through dark times; my family of farmers continue to defy the odds to keep a dairy farm operating in the NEK. I want to suggest that CCV be integrated into the closest college campus-Newport and St. Johnsbury locations could be at NVU-Lyndon; we have a great rural transportation system now in RCT. The Chancellor’s office could move to NVU-Lyndon. Randolph VTC could move to NVU-Lyndon rather than Williston. It seems short-sighted to close a campus where the need is greatest and move them to more populated areas of the state.

Please consider all options to keep Lyndon-NVU open. The Lyndon State College Foundation Members are pleading with you to support keeping NVU-Lyndon open.

LSC Foundation Scholarship for Vermonters, est. 1977A

Peggy Williams Leadership Endowment, est. 1998 with LSCF as lead donor, to support women students demonstrating exemplary leadership in school, community, or work place.

Early Promise Scholarship established with gifts from multiple donors including LSCF to support students of modest family incomes, first in family to attend college.

LSC Foundation Academic Excellence Endowment, est. 1998 also know as LSC Foundation Faculty Development Endowment, provides funding for faculty development initiatives, faculty research, and/or faculty/student projects.

Barry McCormick Memorial Endowment, est. 2006 by the McCormick Family, with gifts from the LSCF awarded to an outstanding Business Major.

Graham Newell Chair in Vermont History, est. 2005 with gifts from multiple donors including LSCF to fund the salary for a professor to teach Vermont History in the style of beloved Graham Newell, annually.

Barbara Bona Endowment, est. 2006 with gifts from multiple donors including LSCF to benefit students from Concord School District.
